Good morning!
Over the weekend a new idea entered my brain.
The idea was that I should start a newsletter breaking down NFL News in a quick and concise manner.
I can’t promise yet that this will continue, but I figured I’d try it out this morning.
The goal is to summarize the news around the NFL so that you don’t have to spend time hopping from article to article to see what’s happened.
If you guys enjoy this feel free to let me know.
Onwards.
5 Teams Most Likely To Sign DeAndre Hopkins Per Betting Odds
Hopkins was released by the Arizona Cardinals on Friday after no team was willing to pony up trade capital because of Hopkins massive contract.
If Hopkins would have stayed on the Cardinals roster he would have carried the highest cap hit among WRs in the NFL at $30.8 million. The Cardinals save $8.15 million meaning Hopkins will count $22.6 million on the cap in 2023 even though he’s not on the team…Yikes!
It’s okay because the Cardinals seem to have given up hope for the 2023 season already.
Now we all sit back and wait to see where he ends up.
Here are the 5 teams with the highest odds as recent as Monday morning per draftkings sports book.
Bills +300
Chiefs +400
Ravens +650
Jets +700
Patriots +900
The only issue with the Bills and Chiefs is their current cap space. The Bills have $2.4 million available while the Chiefs have $1.6 million available.
It may be difficult to sign Hopkins to a contract he likes for these teams but then again, maybe he’s willing to take a pay cut to compete for a Super Bowl.
Teams do crazy things to create cap space that I don’t always understand so you never know what could happen.
The Ravens have $7.5 million in cap space so that could be doable. They’ve already lots of receiver weapons this off-season with Odell Beckham Jr. being the biggest signing. They could sign Hopkins and really be all in for 2023.
The Jets were in the market for Odell and lost out to the Ravens in the end, so there’s a chance. I assume Hopkins would have no problem playing with that new QB in New York. The Jets have $6.9 million in cap space.
If I was Hopkins the Patriots would not be on my radar. The previous teams QB’s are much more favorable than Mac Jones. Hopkins could be THE guy in New England at WR, but my guess is he signs with a team that looks closer to competing for a Super Bowl.
Christian McCaffrey Thinks Running Backs Are UnderValued
On the Rich Eisen Show on Friday 49ers running back stated that he believes the RB position is “undervalued” and that “a lot of guys that are scared to speak up about that for multiple reasons”.
McCaffrey is the highest paid RB in the NFL making about 16 mil per year. There are 17 wide receivers that are making more than him. It’s an unfortunate reality for backs in the league.
The thing is, the market is the market. There’s a reason they’re paid less.
The shelf life of a RB is not as long as an NFL WR. RB play is very dependent on the play of the offensive line. Time and time again no name backs come in and make a name for themselves.
If top tier backs were as valuable to teams as top tier receivers then the pay would reflect that reality.
Jimmy Garappolo’s Foot Injury Is Slightly Worrisome
On March 17 Jimmy G signed a 3 year $72.5 million dollar contract with the Raiders. According to reports Garappolo would not have passed his physical because of his foot injury suffered last December, so a waiver was needed.
ESPN ‘s Paul Gutierrez said this yesterday,
“According to Pro Football Talk, the Raiders could terminate Garoppolo's contract for any reason related to the waiver and that Garoppolo will not be paid any of his $22.5 million base salary for the 2023 season until he passes a physical. The waiver is voided if Garoppolo remains with the Raiders for two days after their final game of the 2023 season, according to the copy posted by NFL Network.”
The Raiders wanted protection in the chance that Jimmy G’s foot doesn’t heal as it should. It recently came out that he had surgery in March after signing with the Raiders, per the Athletic.
If I was a Raiders fan I’d be slightly nervous about the prospects of Jimmy being 100% ready for the season. Clearly the foot injury could potentially continue to be a major problem. I’m assuming Jimmy G thought his foot would heal on its own, which is why he didn’t get surgery until March even though the injury was initially suffered on December 6th.
Time will tell.
Random Stat Of The Day
I found this stat yesterday reading an article from the Athletic about Justin Fields.
Of 31 QBs who started 20 games in their first 2 years here’s where Fields ranks.
Pass yds (30th), comp % (20th), Int % 3.6 (2nd), TD % 4.1 (18th), QB Rating 79.7 (26th), Rush Yds (2nd), 5-20 in first 2 seasons.
Not great. It’s a big season for Fields. We know he can run but he also needs to get better at throwing the football. Adding DJ Moore should help big time. I’d still prefer Jordan Love (Go pack Go).
Thanks for stopping by! Have an amazing day.
