The Steelers Should Sign Aaron Rodgers & Draft A QB
This move makes way too much sense for Mike Tomlin
With news coming out over the weekend that the Jets informed Aaron Rodgers they will no longer be needing his services, there are only a couple teams that are good fits for 41 year old Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers needs to go to an organization that has stability as well as a solid defense.
The Steelers fit that mold.
There’s no doubt that Aaron Rodgers is not the QB that he used to be. His days of playing at an MVP level are behind him. He just had one of the worst seasons of his career. It was his worst passer rating of his career (90.5) if you take away the years before he became the starter in Green Bay and the snaps he took with the Jets before tearing his achilles in 2023. His 90.5 passer rating ranked 20th in the league in 2024. He finished with 28td and 11int.
So what would be different in Pittsburgh in 2025?
Mike Tomlin and the Steelers defense.
There has been nothing but chaos in the Jets organization for as long as I can remember. While the Steelers have struggled to find playoff success in recent years, they are always in the mix.
You can’t tell me that Mike Tomlin wouldn’t at least be enticed by the idea of Aaron Rodgers being the guy at QB in 2025. If the Steelers defense can be a top 10 unit once again, they could be a wild card team with Aaron Rodgers. Even though Rodgers isn’t the QB he once was, he is still very good at limiting turnovers. If you make the playoffs with Aaron Rodgers you never know what could happen.
Now here’s why I really like this idea for the Steelers.
They do not have the answer at QB. They didn’t seem sold on Justin Fields as the long term answer and Russell Wilson wasn’t able to get the job done.
They should 100% be drafting a QB this year. While they won’t be able to land one of the top prospects in Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, they could land someone like Jaxon Dart or Quinn Ewers with either of their picks at 21 or 52. They could then allow that QB to learn behind Rodgers for one year before taking over in 2026 or 2027.
In my eyes signing Aaron Rodgers to a 1 year deal is a risk, but considering the Steelers other options why not take it?
Then in 2026 you can move onto your QB of the future who got 1 year learning behind the most talented quarterback in NFL history.
Throw in the fact that Aaron Rodgers has always been very complimentary of Mike Tomlin and you have a perfect match.
