Why The Packers Signed USFL MVP QB Alex McGough

Before I get into the Packers newest signing I wanted to let you guys know that I’ve started an NFL podcast: “Sideline Scoop Podcast”.

If you’d like to listen to my recent episode you can listen or watch here. I broke down the Jets outlook with Aaron Rodgers, the running back drama, DeAndre Hopkins Effect on the Titans and much more. Now onto the Packers news!

Earlier this week the Green Bay Packers made a significant announcement regarding their quarterback roster by adding Alex McGough. The talented quarterback was originally drafted in the seventh round by the Seahawks in 2018.

Unfortunately, his NFL journey did not gain much traction, as he didn't get a chance to play a single regular-season snap after being drafted. Instead, he spent time on multiple practice squads, including those of the Seahawks, Jaguars, and Texans.

However, McGough's fortunes turned when he joined the USFL, where he had a stellar season in 2023. His impressive stats include a 67.4 completion percentage, 2,105 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, five interceptions, and a remarkable 108.3 rating, earning him the MVP title in the league.

While these numbers might be promising, it's important to consider that the USFL is not on par with the NFL in terms of talent and competition.

The decision to sign Alex McGough reflects the Packers' potential concerns about their current backup quarterback situation. Earlier in the offseason, Coach LaFleur addressed the difficulty of managing four quarterbacks during training camp. Allocating sufficient practice snaps for each player to showcase their abilities becomes challenging in such a scenario. The fact that the Packers opted to bring in McGough suggests that they may not be entirely sold on their backup options behind Jordan Love.

My guess is this has more to do with the Packers lack in confidence in Danny Etling than rookie 5th round draft pick Sean Clifford. While a 5th round pick isn’t a huge investment, it’s more than the Packers had to spend then signing Etling who bounced around from practice squad to practice squad before coming to Green Bay.

My guess is that the Packers believe McGough could out duel Etling in camp with the possibility of him being the Packers back up in 2023 if he has more to offer than Clifford who is more inexperienced. While McGough has yet to play in the NFL, he did recently have success in the USFL. The coaching staff seems intrigued by McGough's talent, as seen in his impressive highlights, demonstrating athleticism, mobility, and accurate throws on the run.

As the preseason approaches, Alex McGough will have a chance to compete with Danny Etling and Sean Clifford for the backup quarterback position. While Jordan Love remains the expected starter for the upcoming season, McGough's arrival adds an element of competition and uncertainty to the quarterback depth chart. All eyes will be on McGough during training camp and the preseason to see if he can sustain his level of play and potentially challenge for the backup role.

As we eagerly anticipate the upcoming season, it will be interesting to see how this decision plays out and whether McGough's success in the USFL translates to the NFL. The Packers are determined to explore all possibilities to find the best backup option for Jordan Love, and McGough's presence adds an exciting dimension to their quarterback situation.
